Founding of Wooster Township

Wooster Township was officially established on April 11, 1812, as one of the four original townships of Wayne County, Ohio. The other three founding townships were Sugarcreek, Mohican, and Prairie.

Origin of the Name

The township was named in honor of General David Wooster, a distinguished Revolutionary War officer known for his leadership and service to the American cause. His legacy of dedication and courage reflects the spirit of the community that bears his name.

Early Settlement

According to the 1810 Census of Wayne County, there were 43 households in the area at that time—12 within the city of Wooster and 12 within Wooster Township itself. These early settlers laid the foundation for the thriving and close-knit community that continues to grow today.
